Hawai`i Natural Area Reserves System

The NARS Needs Your Kökua!

King Kaläkaua’s kähea, “Ho`oulu lahui” ("Nurture the land and all its inhabitants"), referred not only to the need for the people to respond to the decreasing Native Hawaiian population, but to mälama the ‘äina. The word “ho‘oulu” means to nurture and protect, while “lähui” is used interchangeably with the people and species of plants and animals. The term “ho`omau” means to continue or perpetuate. Please help protect the NARS now and
perpetuate this legacy for future generations!Summary of the Draft 2005 Kökua Bill – December 29, 2004 (172K PDF)
