Mauna Kea: Ecosystem Science

The Summit of Mauna Kea hosts one of the rarest habitats on earth born out of the Ice Age. Lake Waiau is fed by melting glacier waters and is the only source of fresh water on the summit. The summit is also the only home of the rare Wekiu, which is a candidate for endangered species status. It is also home to the rare and endangered Silversword.

Waiau is the only source of fresh water at the summit of Mauna Kea.

Silversword plants struggle to survive on Mauna Kea.
