News article on the upcoming TMT Case

Sunrise on Mauna Kea

Sigh. Not super exciting, but at least the case is getting some news coverage. Definitely more to this case, though, than what is written here.

One major point needs correction, though.  The Hawaii Tribune Herald writes that the TMT:

"...would be built on the northwest plateau of Mauna Kea, several hundred feet below the true summit, and would be visible from lower elevations on the Kohala side of the mountain."

According to the TMT's own viewplane analysis, the TMT would be visible from the summit looking towards Haleakala and the setting sun.  It would also be visible to those looking up towards the summit from the Northside of Hawaii Island -- all of Waimea, Kohala, Pu`ukohala, on the road to Honoka`a.  So to say it would be "visible from lower elevations" is such an understatement that it is misleading.
